Removing Distractions and Methods of Evaluation

High-quality observation is one of the most essential skills a coach can develop. The ability to observe and assess accurately, while focusing on the right factors, enables a coach to sift through numerous variables and evaluate players effectively.

Observation is an active skill that can be trained and refined. Unlike passive “looking,” effective observation requires deliberate effort and attention. With practice and the use of intentional methods, coaches can significantly improve their observational skills. One of the simplest and most impactful ways to enhance observation is by eliminating distractions.

Best practices include:

  • Ensuring a Clean and Safe Playing Area – A clutter-free, hazard-free environment allows both coach and player to focus fully.
  • Managing Time Effectively – Use a watch or clock to stay on schedule and minimize unnecessary interruptions.
  • Familiarizing Yourself with the Lesson Plan – Be prepared for the next drill or talking point to maintain a seamless progression.
  • Eliminating Personal Distractions – Avoid using cell phones or engaging in unrelated conversations during lessons.

Methods of Evaluation:

In a one-on-one drill setting, coaches should focus on two key areas when assessing performance:

1. Form/Mechanics – The player’s technique, including grip, footwork, and stroke mechanics.
2. Shot Outcome – The result of the shot, such as consistency, trajectory, accuracy, velocity, and spin.

It is important to note that form and shot outcome do not always correlate directly. A shot executed with poor form may still achieve the desired result, while a technically sound shot may not. Evaluating these factors both individually and together allows coaches to form a more comprehensive understanding of the player’s performance. This dual approach helps identify patterns and areas for improvement while also reinforcing positive habits.

Narrowing the Focus:

Identifying the highest-yield information is the cornerstone of effective observation. Coaches should prioritize factors that will have the greatest impact on a player’s development. This concept will be expanded upon in upcoming modules.
