Footwork Introduction

Footwork is the vehicle that delivers a player into position to play shots, making it foundational to overall performance. Shot quality and consistency are largely determined by how effectively a player moves to reach the ball. A player’s movement patterns can function as either a strength that sets up success or a weakness that continually serves as a liability. Footwork largely determines essential factors such as:

  • Balance and coordination
  • Contact point
  • Shot options
  • Mental composure

Movement patterns also apply across all areas of the court and set up all different types of shots – making footwork one of the highest-leverage skill sets a player can learn, develop, and integrate.

This overview of the footwork structure defines where categories of footwork fit within the overall framework and is intended to provide a clear mapping system to progressions and set benchmarks that aid measurement of a player’s proficiency. Rather than learning movements in isolation, it is far more productive to understand the broader framework that provides connection and clarity to the overall system.

As can be observed in the flow chart below, the footwork progression is designed to follow a practical and actionable approach:

  • Start with stationary movement patterns at the kitchen line to keep difficulty low.
  • Progress gradually to short-range movements that begin to expand coverage and raise the difficulty level.
  • Complete the progression with more dynamic movements that more fully expand court coverage and make execution most difficult.

This teaching framework and its set of progressions are designed to provide early success through simplicity of learning, instill solid fundamentals, remain adaptable as a player progresses and requires greater challenge, and gradually develop well-rounded movement from all areas of the court.

All three primary movement categories are instrumental to court coverage, contact point, and overall performance. The following footwork modules will zoom in on the specifics of each category.
